OCTOBER 12: HISPANIDAD DAY

English · Español OJMC Home Index Topics Copy Link Share History and the Hispanic World · OJMC-W042 OCTOBER 12: HISPANIDAD DAY Lic. Oscar J Méndez C. Original Publication: October 12, 2025 We are the victorious Hispanic blood; we are also the victorious Indigenous blood of those who fought to destroy the dominant, enslaving Aztec imperialism (which offered thousands of victims to its idols and practiced cannibalism), and who, with the help of the Castilians, succeeded in throwing off the yoke under which they suffered and which claimed so many lives. Our Homeland is a nation founded upon a triumph, not upon a defeat, as falsified history deceptively teaches. Mexico was not the Aztec Empire. Before the arrival of the Spaniards, there was no nation, but a collection of different peoples dominated and enslaved by that imperialism. Our Homeland is the nation born of the union between victorious Indigenous peoples of MULTIPLE ETHNIC GROUPS and victorious Spaniards. The Hispanics...

THEY EAT AND DRINK THEIR OWN CONDEMNATION

English · Español OJMC Home Index Topics Copy Link Share Sacraments · OJMC-W041 THEY EAT AND DRINK THEIR OWN CONDEMNATION Lic. Oscar J Méndez C. Original Publication: October 10, 2025   A baptized Catholic who retains the faith but is a sinner who does not repent of his sins and lives as though God's law did not exist is on the path to damnation, and if he remains so until the end of his life, he will ultimately be damned. He cannot receive the sacraments of the living until he repents of his grave sins and confesses them with true contrition and a firm purpose of amendment; nevertheless, if he retains the faith, he remains part of the Church. He will live in sin, it will not be lawful for him to receive Communion, he will be separated from God because he lacks sanctifying grace, and he will be a fool walking toward his eternal ruin; but as long as he retains the faith, he remains part of the Church and would have the possibility of repenting. Of course, today modernism...

MODESTY DOES NOT HIDE BEAUTY; ON THE CONTRARY, IT PRESERVES AND ENHANCES IT

Original Publication: September 26, 2025 A woman who displays herself half-naked on the beach, or dresses in scanty, provocative clothing before the public gaze, does not bear witness to love for herself; rather, she cries out, in silent desperation, for fleeting attention. In her desire to win the passing admiration of frivolous men, she ends up stripping herself of her own dignity. Very different is the beauty of modesty, which does not extinguish feminine radiance, but safeguards it as a treasure and enhances it with mystery and purity. A modest and chaste woman is like a sealed garden: revered and esteemed by men of noble heart, who know how to recognize in her the true and enduring worth of the feminine. THE CAUSE OF THE WORST CRISIS THE CHURCH HAS EVER ENDURED

Image
English · Español OJMC Home Index Topics Copy Link Share Faith and Doctrine · OJMC-W043 THE CAUSE OF THE WORST CRISIS THE CHURCH HAS EVER ENDURED Lic. Oscar J Méndez C. Original Publication: July 22, 2026   His Holiness Pius IX warned: “Catholic liberalism is one foot in truth and one foot in error; one foot in the Church and one foot in the world, one foot with me and one foot with my enemies… What afflicts your country and prevents it from meriting the blessings of Heaven is the confusion of principles. I will say the word and will not remain silent: what I fear most for you is not those wretches of the Commune, true demons escaped from hell, but Catholic liberalism, that fatal system which always dreams of reconciling two impossible things: the Church and the Revolution. I have already condemned it, but I would condemn it forty more times if necessary. Yes, I say it again out of the love I bear you; yes, that balancing act is what may ultimately destroy religion among yo...

Saint Louis and Our Time

Topics: Faith and Religious Life; History and the Hispanic World; Politics and Society. By LIC. OSCAR MÉNDEZ CERVANTES History, the teacher of life—as the ancient writer called it—never loses the relevance of its lessons. We are pleased now to recall one of them in the figure, familiar—though less so than he deserves—of that outstanding exemplar of the Middle Ages, the king of France: Louis IX, the Saint; a man of vigor whose heroic practice of every virtue led the Church to raise him to the honors of the altar. In him, God found the most faithful servant; Christendom, the most intrepid champion; the French people, the most loving father. His ascetic life amid the splendor of the throne has something of the magnificent, manly religious spirit of the Hispanic world. An inheritance, no doubt, from his exemplary Spanish mother, Doña B...

The Wall

English · Español Identifier: SD-089. Original Publication: Novedades — Sunday Supplement , August 22, 1948. Author: LIC. OSCAR MÉNDEZ CERVANTES. Topics: Philosophy and Culture. By LIC. OSCAR MÉNDEZ CERVANTES The little boy's soul reached out, with admiring and affectionate emotion, toward those sturdy walls, thick and high, with their air of nobility. The whitewash was a grainy map upon which climbing ivy marked the geographical features, tracing fabulous islands and continents in a deep, intense green. The few cracks, by contrast, were veined with moss of a light, joyous green, which his lively childish imagination saw as atolls and coral archipelagos gradually emerging from the ocean depths. The wall sheltered and encircled the vast garden and spacious residence which, on the outskirts of the capital, stood as a living memory of bygone splendors, with its parquet floors and coffered ceilings; its multicolored stained glass in the dining room; its bronze French arquebusi...

XXIV. Final Reflections

English · Español Identifier: GE-022. Original Publication: Novedades — Editorial Section , June 21, 1948. Author: LIC. OSCAR MÉNDEZ CERVANTES. Topics: Philosophy and Culture; History and the Hispanic World. Fragments of the Epic By LIC. OSCAR MÉNDEZ CERVANTES XXIV FINAL REFLECTIONS. The fourth centenary of the death of Cortés—preceded a year earlier by the discovery of the Conqueror's remains—has given us an opportunity to contribute to the exaltation of his memory, however modest our little corner of journalism may be. An objective and realistic patriotism has guided us in this undertaking. That has been our sole purpose. If our assertions have sometimes clashed with certain prejudices against Cortés that some people still hold in good faith, we have not sought to provoke controversy or wound anyone, but—simply—to be heard. Those who systematically and for self-serving reasons vilify Cortés are not worth much attention, and so we have referred to them only minimally an...

Memory and Forgetting

English · Español Identifier: SD-088. Original Publication: Novedades — Sunday Supplement , August 8, 1948. Author: LIC. OSCAR MÉNDEZ CERVANTES. Topics: Philosophy and Culture. By LIC. OSCAR MÉNDEZ CERVANTES In the marvelous living architecture of human psychology, the faculty of making present what is remote in space or time is certainly not among its least admirable elements. The exercise of memory is so habitual and spontaneous—being one of the very conditions of our existence—that it very rarely engages our reflection. But when it does, when on some occasion we pause to consider that faculty of the spirit and the extraordinary mechanisms that move it, one marvel follows another. In what hidden storehouse of the psyche are life's experiences, concepts, images, feelings and sensations deposited, and even complex states of mind that have their place in that filing cabinet, sometimes perfectly classified, sometimes disordered and without arrangement?… No one could say, yet...
