          The Wall

OSCAR MÉNDEZ CERVANTES The little boy's soul reached out, with admiring and affectionate emotion, toward those sturdy walls, thick and high, with their air of nobility. In him, God found the most faithful servant; Christendom, the most intrepid champion; the French people, the most loving father. His ascetic life amid the splendor of the throne has something of the magnificent, manly religious spirit of the Hispanic world. An inheritance, no doubt, from his exemplary Spanish mother, Doña B...

          Memory and Forgetting

OSCAR MÉNDEZ CERVANTES In the marvelous living architecture of human psychology, the faculty of making present what is remote in space or time is certainly not among its least admirable elements. The exercise of memory is so habitual and spontaneous—being one of the very conditions of our existence—that it very rarely engages our reflection. But when it does, when on some occasion we pause to consider that faculty of the spirit and the extraordinary mechanisms that move it, one marvel follows another. In what hidden storehouse of the psyche are life's experiences, concepts, images, feelings and sensations deposited, and even complex states of mind that have their place in that filing cabinet, sometimes perfectly classified, sometimes disordered and without arrangement?… No one could say, yet...
